Technology in Education: 18th October 2017

In October I joined Jennie White, Senior Lecturer in Marketing, as she presented at the Westminster Higher Education Forum.
The focus of the day was how technology is impacting higher education, and covered topics such as MOOCs, data protection, user analytics, and the digitisation of libraries.

Jennie was invited to share her expertise in the use of video for the enhancement of the student experience, and how it could have a positive impact on tricky areas such as assessment feedback.

Flipped classrooms

Jennie started recording her teaching sessions whilst working at Bournemouth University and was instrumental in the University of Chichester’s uptake of Panopto in 2014. She now pre-records most of her lectures, flipping the classroom to better support students to engage with content heavy sessions such as search engine optimisation (SEO). This process has been such a positive impact on the students that they have even been in touch after graduation, asking if they can have access to these videos as they prepare for interviews. This could be why her graduates celebrate a 100% employment rate.

“I feel that I did learn more from the flipped classroom, the way I leaned was different too.”

“…during face to face sessions, after watching the lecture, I felt like I had questions that I wanted to ask the lecturer and it was all avour what I had learnt and I was looking forward to showing her what I’ve been thinking about.”

It’s not just her lectures she’s recording, Jennie has been using Panopto (now re-branded as ChiPlayer at the University) to support students working on their assignments. One-to-one dissertation tutorials would be recorded so that the student leaves with a recording that they can revisit and reflect upon at a later date.

“That has led to a huge, huge increase in the understanding we’re getting and the standard of literature reviews and methodologies”

Assessment and feedback

The TEF and the NSS both highlight sector-wide student dissatisfaction with assessment and feedback, leading institutions to trial and adopts new innovative approaches.

Jennie utilises video assignment feedback in order to enhance the student understanding and prompt engagement with feedback. Once a written assignment has been submitted, she opens it up onto her PC screen alongside the marking rubric, and records the screen, narrating and marking-up the document as she goes. This gives the students the full transparency of the marking process. In addition to this, 10% of the grade is held back until the student watches the recording and explains how they would engage with the feedback to make it better.

“I LOVE THIS”

“Please can this be done for all modules”
